Self Portrait at the Dressing Table (1909) by Zinaida Serebriakova Zinaida Serebriakova’s Self-Portrait at the Dressing Table (1909) is a striking and intimate depiction of the artist in a quiet moment of personal grooming. The painting captures a woman—Serebriakova herself—brushing her long brown hair, gazing directly at the viewer with a soft, knowing smile. We see her as if from the other side of the mirror, an illusion that draws us into her private space. There’s something remarkably modern about the scene—her expression, the loose, natural composition, and the casual yet confident way she presents herself. The dressing table is cluttered with powders, perfumes, and trinkets, evoking a timeless sense of femininity and self-adornment. However, small details remind us of the painting’s early 20th-century origins: the hatpins standing upright in their cushion and the presence of a washbasin in the background, an item that hints at a time before indoor plumbing was ubiquitous. Created in 1909, this self-portrait is one of Serebriakova’s most famous works, capturing both her artistic skill and her ability to convey warmth, intimacy, and an unpretentious elegance. The painting remains a testament to her talent and her unique perspective on the self-portrait genre.#art #painting #artist #artwork #shorts
