Chronic misattunement (especially if from parental figures) is a common source of developmental trauma, it’s a form of neglect

i put so much effort into communicating clearly, effectively and precisely. i use the EXACT words that i mean, nothing more and nothing less. being misunderstood feels like being told i’m failing at socializing/communicating. i’m not used to failing at things i put so much effort into perfecting.

Omg… so when autistic people mirror with a sameness story, to “prove” they understand, instead of just saying it, that might also be a learned result of not being properly mirrored by NT people, because those don’t actually get their experience. But also, why NT people think stories of sameness are self-centered, because they want to hear the emotion. But autistic people have trouble naming the emotion! I think I’m one to something…

Our brains seek to find solutions. There is no solution to this. We are imo unable to reconcile the loss of connection due to someone else’s inability to hold complexity.

It feels like psychological torture. This has been my experience for a lot of my life but especially the past year. No one reflecting back to me what I’m saying or expressing and it’s been incredibly isolating

As you get older, you recognize your own uniqueness...and that due to a person's limitations...they could never understand you.
You stop explaining.
I understand, and that's more than enough.

This explains 90% of my frustration with my husband omg. He loves playing “devils advocate” and I’m realizing it’s so painful bc it comes off as a dismissal of the emotion I’m trying to share. I still want him to have his own opinions, but need him to attune to mine when I express my feelings about something. Wow

my favorite one is when you share something you just learned, and they argue with you and repeatedly tell you that you're wrong. its repeatedly invalidation 😬

As a therapist that’s one of the most common tells. Also working with kids, they have a lot of anger that’s misunderstood.

I believe it’s less about being misunderstood. It’s not feeling seen/heard. If the person cared enough. Then they should be able to (in theory) understand or at least pretend to understand

Oh yeah. It's extra painful when I'm emotionally literate enough to step into their shoes be incredibly attuned to others to the point they feel safe and can be vulnerable and tell me their secrets. Yet it's rare when they can do the same for me.

The day a mentor said “people aren’t looking for solutions, they’re looking for connection” absolutely revolutionized my life. The goal in conversations no longer became information, but community. Made me much more effective because people were willing to work with me more 😅

Autistic communication is about achieving shared consensus on reality. Thwarting that frustrates us. Hence gifted people getting grrr when they can't corral others to the reality that they feel like they perceive easily.

also in the example equally frustrating when the response is over reacting like “omg i’m so sorry you’re so upset, let me help you!!!” when it’s like no chill i was just communicating some light frustration.. or minimizes it and gaslights like “woah calm down, it’s just a flight, chill out” and it’s like i am calm? both of these are just people who are actually uncomfortable handling any emotions at all
