He flipped on his emergency lights. The driver pulled to the side. Officer Powers radioed his spot to dispatch and approached. The driver was 23-year-old Elise Watson. He pointed out her headlights were off. As they talked, he caught a whiff of booze. He saw signs she was impaired. She first said she came from a house party. Later, she owned up to a bar. She was the group's sober driver that night. Officer Wessendorf showed up. They had Elise step out for sobriety tests. It was freezing outside, so they moved her to the police station lobby. Powers tried the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test there. No smooth eye tracking. Jerky shakes at full turn. Shakes started before 45 degrees. Plus vertical shakes. Next came the Walk and Turn. She missed heel-to-toe touches. Botched the turn. Wrong step count. Last was One Leg Stand. She dropped her foot too soon. Test failed. The booze smell, her drinking admission, and botched tests added up. Powers arrested her for DUI. She stayed calm, so no cuffs needed on the walk to booking. A car search turned up open booze containers. At the station, she blew into the breathalyzer. Result: 0.192% BAC. Double the 0.08% limit.
