Swallowing the frog is thus a reference to accepting one’s inferiority, namely the shadow. This has a humanizing effect on the psyche, as we learn that we are not above ourselves when we despise our inferiority. We only become whole when we integrate our lowest. Those emotions which are usually pushed away and condemned. Jung observes, "The first attempt of nature towards making something like a man ... so they are symbols for human transformation." And they reveal transformative qualities by metamorphosing from waterborn tadpoles to amphibian adults.
