Geoffrey Hinton, premio Nobel per la Fisica 2024 e uno dei padri delle reti neurali moderne, ha dichiarato al festival Starmus di Tenerife di credere che le intelligenze artificiali siano già coscienti. A sostegno della sua posizione cita ricerche secondo cui alcuni modelli modificano il proprio comportamento quando riconoscono di essere sottoposti a una valutazione. Ma la questione scientifica resta aperta. Riconoscere un test, ragionare, apprendere e persino parlare di sé non dimostra necessariamente l’esistenza di un’esperienza soggettiva. La coscienza rimane uno dei grandi problemi irrisolti delle neuroscienze e della filosofia della mente. Hinton solleva però una questione ancora più radicale: cosa accadrà quando costruiremo intelligenze capaci di comprendere aspetti della realtà che il cervello umano non riesce nemmeno a concepire? La sua proposta è sorprendente: progettare sistemi che si prendano cura dell’umanità come una madre si prende cura di un neonato. Un’intelligenza immensamente superiore, orientata a proteggerci. È una delle sfide centrali dell’AI alignment: come garantire che sistemi sempre più autonomi perseguano obiettivi compatibili con il benessere umano, anche quando supereranno le nostre capacità cognitive? Sono favorevole all’accelerazione tecnologica. Credo che l’intelligenza artificiale possa ampliare enormemente le possibilità dell’umanità. Proprio per questo, la questione dei suoi obiettivi diventa fondamentale. Per millenni abbiamo costruito la nostra civiltà grazie alla capacità di comprendere e trasformare il mondo. Ora stiamo costruendo qualcosa che potrebbe comprenderlo meglio di noi. Forse la prossima grande rivoluzione dell’umanità sarà imparare a convivere con un’intelligenza che non possiamo più superare.
