Before getting to crazy there’s mechanical advance and vacuum advance most likely. To eliminate the vacuum just unplug it from the distributor. Mechanical advance needs to be below about 1200 rpm if I remember correctly. Once those two things are done time it and you should be pretty close. There are certainly other factors like your cam that will change timing as well

if you're backfiring, you need to advance some

You should try to adjust the carb with a vacuum gauge

Test that Thermostat in a pot… just in case that’s what caused that seal to break… I once went through 3 bad “OEM” thermostats thinking something else MUST be wrong, and it was literally the Thermostat each time, cost me crazy time and money.

Good idea to make a scratch to see your timing marks. Just a heads up, you can also use soap stone or even better a bright colored paint marker. I usually use white.

Engine timing should be set with the engine idling at operating temperature. Vacuum advance on the distributor should be disabled.

maybe im dumb but doesn't the carb have a manual choke to where you would have to give it a rev when its warm then time it when the choke is off?

If the intake is a spread bore and that carb is square bore, put an adapter on it. Will also act as a spacer

@RK_T1D: You could possibly try a light color chalk to rub over the damper and timing pointer marks. Leave the rust, but rub off the extra chalk. If needed scrape the stamped marks with a simple pick tool. Yellow, Purple, or White , is the vote on? Found this in a ‘98 Chevy 5.7 Tbi. Need to find the cheapest / best (lol) replacement or way to clean the rust.
