@dougsingsacoustic: John Lennon was complex—which is one reason his gentle side is such a special place to inhabit. In Dear Prudence, he warmly coaxes us out of our shells by offering a different way of looking at the world. He invites us into the sky, where clouds take the shape of something a child might weave with their hands. It’s an empathetic, supportive, and quietly optimistic side of John. This song was written in India - John learned the fingerpicking pattern for this song from Donovan while there. When I was sixteen, I learned this pattern by separating what the thumb was doing from what the fingers were doing, then slowly putting them back together. I had to concentrate so hard that I went to my sister’s room and asked her to listen and tell me if I was doing it right. I love this song in a very fundamental way. It’s a building block of my relationship with music. The band adds so much to this recording that I’m not sure it could ever be improved upon.
