@rjriveracoaching: I’ll never forget this meeting… Brought a senior advisor in with 20 years of experience and all the letters after his name into a meeting with a prospective client. This guy pours his heart out to us, telling us about how much he hates his 9-5 and how he dreams of starting this business that he’s passionate about. The advisor completely brushes over it, and directs his attention to how great his pension will be if he continues working for his firm for another 20 years. “At that point you can start your business cuz you’ll have that consistent income!” That’s when it hit me. This “advisor” didn’t care about helping this man achieve his goals and live a fulfilling life. All he cared about was making sure he kept that steady income. Why? So that he could fund the financial products that make us a commission. And so that he could continue funding it long term so that we get those renewals/passive income. So while we are using him to create streams of passive income, we are telling him to passively invest his money while wasting his life working a job he hates for the next 20 years. This experience helped me realize that as an advisor- my financial incentives were not aligned with my clients goals- they were aligned with the financial services and investment company’s goals. Financial services firms want your money. They want it consistently- on a systematic basis. They want to keep your money as long as possible. And they want to give you back as little of it as possible on the back end. This is why retirement is a myth. It’s another way to keep the masses disempowered and controlled. Time to wake up. Time to do things differently. Time to actually understand and utilize the velocity of money.
