Two helicopters collided while approaching a helipad in Nepal’s Everest region on the morning of November 3, killing an Indian tourist and injuring a New Zealand passenger and both pilots. The accident occurred in Pheriche, a village on the trekking route toward Everest Base Camp. Police told ABC that the Air Dynasty aircraft was operating a cargo flight from Lukla to Pheriche with only its pilot aboard. The Fishtail Air helicopter carried two foreign passengers and a pilot. Both were approaching the same landing site when the collision occurred. Police identified the deceased as Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu of Chennai, India. The other passenger, Shailesh Krishan Patel of New Zealand, was seriously injured and airlifted to Nepal Mediciti Hospital in Kathmandu. Both pilots also received treatment. A weather livestream camera operated by Webcam Nepal recorded the accident. The footage shows the helicopters approaching close to the ground before making contact. It establishes that a collision occurred, but the camera angle alone cannot determine responsibility. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Director General Mukesh Dangol told The Kathmandu Post that preliminary reports suggested a possible communication problem between the pilots. He said the area was outside Lukla airport tower coverage and required pilot-to-pilot coordination. The cause remains under investigation. Pheriche sits more than 4,000 meters above sea level. Helicopters in the region carry tourists, supplies and medical evacuees during Nepal’s busy autumn trekking season. No finding has established that weather, commercial competition or mechanical failure caused this collision.
