My son is blind so the only way he can read is through an audiobook! Absolutely still counts

There are people who are blind! Or have other health conditions that affects their reading capabilities! Did anyone ever think of that!? I’m so exhausted from this whole thing! Listening to audiobooks is still READING.

YES!! Thank you!!!!! I have dyslexia. Until 2015 I hadn’t read a single physical book all the way through but since finding audiobooks, I’ve listened to over 900 and I’m a real reader.

Only 12% of the world was literate in 1820. How do you think the majority of people consumed books earlier than that and even after, through word of mouth and storytelling!

Are people telling their kid that story time doesn’t count? “Hey kid, I will read this to you, but you can’t count it as a book that you’ve read because you’re just listening to me, okay? You can’t tell your friends that you love Dr. Seuss until you read it for yourself.” Why even read your them? Is it not enriching? Will they not get it? It’s ridiculous how this argument has perpetuated. (As someone who reads, listens, and will do both at the same time. 🤣)

Growing up with dyslexia I felt like I missed out on so much as a kid, I couldn't keep up with Harry Potter like the other kids. Discovering audiobooks changed my life, they also taught me how to read

I feel like this opinion is very ableist and if we want to *reeealy* go there when people get weird about it I’m like you didn’t read a book you looked at it. Reading is reading leave me and everyone else alone

I asked my friend that is a librarian this question when I first got back into reading and tracking a few years ago and she said 100% I should count my audiobooks as books read. We should listen to the professionals 🤪 I love reading both ways for various reasons!

It doesn't matter how you absorb a book its the comprehension of what you absorb that matters.

Read or listen. It’s consuming the information, story, everything either way. When I was younger, I struggled with reading because of dyslexia and loved audio books because they helped me understand (Harry Potter narrated by Jim Dale). I love both! I also love podcasts. I listen to them while working, they make my day better and I focus better.

I have a couple books I can’t even remember if I read a physical book or listened to it via audiobook. My brain can’t tell the difference when thinking about it when talking about the book.

Right?! And who knows what they would call what I do since I almost always bounce back and forth between text and audio depending on what works best for that day.

I’m so fed up hearing about it at this point 😂 why do people get so annoyed about it, we still escape to these worlds and take in the story regardless ❤️

I honestly think that this entire issue is based on ego. I think that a lot of people who eyeball read all of their books think that they are superior to people who listen to audiobooks, and I feel that that reason has a lot to do with building their own ego and helping them to feel better than other people and to make others feel badly about themselves. This is connected to the entire conversation that was going on all last week about people only liking romantically instead of literary fiction because they want to feel superior or they believe themselves to be superior to people who read books that they feel are beneath them.

Why does it matter to anyone how I read or consume a book? Everyone is so bothered by what the next person is doing, it just don’t make sense to me
