@jonjon.jpeg: You don’t become talented by willing it. You become talented by practicing. The same is true for doing the right thing. If you never push back when the stakes are low, you won’t have the moral muscle when the stakes are high. James C. Scott calls this anarchist calisthenics: regularly breaking the stupid rules so you’re prepared to resist the harmful ones. Small acts of resistance train us for the moments that actually matter. #AnarchistCalisthenics #JamesCScott
People keep asking why strike or boycott with a time limit. Anarchist calisthenics

A great small step is wearing a mask in public! It’s frowned upon and people face pressure not to. And most importantly it’s a society good that is needed! It protects you and your community both from a virus but also normalizes it so it’s not just disabled people still masking.

As a sociology teacher, when I teach deviance, I have my students commit an act of deviance and then share it in class. They always get really creative and have fun with it, but it also has an impact on them and the way they think about authority.

reminder that Anarchy just means "no rulers." The fact that it's used as a synonym for chaos or lawlessness is the result of propaganda

This is interesting as a parent. I’m working on letting my kids push back on things they disagree with in our home, hoping that it will help them have the skills and confidence to push back out in the real world.

I once saw my young adult nephew put something in the microwave for 57 seconds. Every time that he didn’t enter a “popular” number, he was building up his “resist authority” muscles.

This is just civil disobedience. And it’s best (not only, just ideally) done utilizing collectivism and ideally done in an *organized* manner, with plans, demands an end goal in mind. Like the Montgomery Bus Boycott for example.

Hey :
In my Catholic high school I’d deliberately leave my shirt untucked even if I got in trouble. And I looked forward to receiving my honors awards throughout the year on stage deliberately out of uniform even if I got detention. And now I have no problem walking into my boss’s office and bringing up uncomfy subjects or standing up for my team. Like I learned that being “in trouble” only works if I am complicit in feeling bad and I don’t give a shit so it exposes their lack of power. It’s awesome being a menace for good

we are conditioned for compliance, we have to practice being inconvenient, practice being in the way.

they removed a covered bus stop that is infront of a grocery store in my city- which is so small it technically isnt a city, bc weirdly enough, we also have a very large homeless population. they did this bc homeless ppl would sleep there at night.
I also live in Michigan, and its freezing. so not only did they remove access for homeless ppl, the older ppl and disabled ppl now have to sit out in the elements to wait for the bus...
Anyway, thanks for the idea!

Street skating has led me to not care as much as I used to about skating on or around “private property” one of the biggest reasons I got into skating was the pure joy I had but as I skated more I became more socially aware bc of the people I would watch or interact with. Skateboarding to me is always imbedded in counter culture and resistance to authority and that just has always stuck w me

Your content was the gateway for me to learn about urbanism. That was maybe a year ago now and since then, I started riding my bike around the city, I’ve gotten more involved in local politics, and I recently sold my car since Seattle is a place where you can do that 😁

Are people out here acting differently depending on if people are watching? Do we not have the same morals regardless? Have I learned something new about myself?
