No sis, it’s definitely anti intellectualism. You have people who haven’t read a book or written a paper since high school starting to get back into reading and they literally do not comprehend that the construction of the book is bad. They don’t notice the plot holes or the grammar issues. And if you point it out, they say you’re pretentious. Also, we have to remember that the people currently reading are the 1st/2nd generation of students that were involved in the no child left behind program. I’m actually starting to think that they truly do not understand how a book is supposed to be constructed.

They don’t realize that they’re bad books bc a lot them aren’t actually reading the books. There was a girl that got on here and said she doesn’t read long paragraphs or long dialogue. Like 100 people agreed with her.

I think it’s both, it is anti-intellectualism but driven by capitalism. If bad books are best sellers and booktokers viralize them, then publishers will keep the bar that low bc it’s profitable, mediocre booktokers are making it so with their ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️recommendations. You’re both right.

I’ve noticed when they DO criticize a book, the criticism is about the characters. Like, “she was annoying”. Not “I don’t think she was very well written.” It’s like they think the plot and the writing are the same thing, and they don’t get that they’re not, and they find it insulting when everyone says so.

I think what she said in a more recent video really clears up what she means: “This isn’t elitism; it’s discernment.”

heavy on the "its bad because Ive read the same book so many times by different authors" thas my biggest complaint. they are all the same. Just trying to hit all the tropes. fast fashion for the publishing world.

no bc its totally ok to have a guilty pleasure but actively ignoring bad writing and purchasing these lazy books is pushing publishers to prioritize slop over quality fiction. and every genre has its slop, but ive never seen it marketed the way that romantasy has been.

I think people have a hard time admitting they like bad stuff. A movie I absolutely love is Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. It is in no way a good movie but it has my heart and that’s okay.

it can be a five star read but like don't say it's a literally masterpiece, some bad books are five stars for me BUT I KNOW THEY'RE BAD. I thinks that's the difference. She's right. I didn't like her delivery but she's absolutely correct.

It’s okay to read badly written books , and enjoying them ! But .. understanding that they aren’t amazing and we only read it for fun is an important point !

The fact that lots of people got offended and thought she was judging their love for certain books made it all the more fun because they didn't even got her point.

Y’all forgot the part where reading is subjective and a five star read for one person is a one star or zero star read for somebody else and that’s what blows my mind.

REAL!!! It’s so hard to explain to people that I didn’t like ACOTAR and Fourth Wing not because they “weren’t for me,” but because I think they’re OBJECTIVELY bad. And like… I’m trying to engage with booktok on their level, you know? They say they want their books to be taken seriously but then as soon as you critique them seriously then it just “wasn’t for you.” No, girl, a side character gave a four-page-long speech about the villain’s backstory halfway through the book. It was objectively bad.
