I work at a bank & we don’t refer to them as bank holidays 🤷🏾♀️We say Federal or the actual Holiday name… We need to tell them that banks don’t control holidays 🤦🏾♀️

It is regional. I have always heard "Bank Holiday " when referring to a Holiday that only the banks close for - meaning schools and work remain open.

Lived in Merica my whole life and this is the first time in my short 32 years that ive heard them called "bank" holidays. Lol Are they holidays that USUALLY only the banks honor? yes. But they are not holidays made by the banks. They are holidays made from Amendments, civil rights events, etc. Federal Holidays.

I grew up hearing "bank holidays" in California. Not on official documents or anything, just among casual discussion. But I'm old and my family was old when I was born so that could be why.

Maybe this is a southern thing but I've never heard anyone use the "federal holidays" before you. I've only ever heard people use "bank holiday" to talk about those days. Maybe it's just regional?

I grew up hearing bank holiday (born and raised in PA) only because my mom has worked in banking her whole adult life and we used it in the family as a way to differentiate a day she got off work but my dad didnt even though it was a holiday.

Born and raised in SW PA and we’ve always used “bank holiday” and “federal holiday” interchangeably. I’m certainly not saying it’s correct, but there are definitely people who use that term to describe a holiday when places like banks and post offices are closed

I know this wasn't the point but thanks for talking about this... i always assumed Americans called it Federal holidays because the Fed was closed and Brits called it Bank holidays cause the Central bank was closed.

I have worked in the banking industry for 18 years, I have a calendar from the Federal Reserve. They are Federal Holidays. The place I’m at now is international, those holidays have under them “Bank Holiday”. US says “Federal Holiday”.

So I can distinctly remember a time when bank holidays weren’t always federal holidays and that’s why a lot of people where I grew up in Virginia referred to them as bank holidays. The culture shifted and bank holidays and federal holidays pretty much all align now so a shift has happened and most people now say federal holidays because they’re one and the same. Could it have been that where I lived in Virginia the banks had additional holidays? Possibly. There’s also state holidays and federal holidays. I used to work for the state here in NC, we had a few additional days that weren’t federal holidays and the banks usually close on those. People often refer to those at bank holidays because only the state buildings and banks close. But you’re not gonna hear everyone do it and it’s likely more prevalent to me because I worked for the state. I would say it’s been the last 10 years that it mostly all lines up, maybe less. Because working for the state I had more days off as holidays than my husband whose days off only line up with the federal holidays

Born and raised in SE Michigan... We call any federal holiday that the damn banks are closed a "bank holiday".... Its never about the federal buildings being closed but the banks 😆

no dude you're generalizing too much here. I guess it's regional bc I've ALWAYS heard them referred to as "bank holidays" in NC and my family from SC does it too. maybe it's a coastal southern thing but it's definitely a thing in the US

I’ve heard “bank holiday” as like a joke like only fancy people get those days off. Or like “bankers hours” if you have a “good schedule”

I grew up thinking a “bank” holiday was a day off for no real reason. Like only banks were closed and nothing else. I knew it wasn’t a serious thing.

Idk about that. I’ve called them bank holidays. I only say federal or state when talking about the type of bank holiday it is. I think we should know by now our country is massive and we have a million ways to say things.

Your wrong the majority of Americans are saying you do have bank holidays so just wear it don’t dig deeper by the way in Australia they are called public holidays
