In college you’re an adult (especially if your 25+), this isn’t HS, I’m not a child. You will speak to me with respect. I’m paying to be here.

If they think mean emails like that are okay when another professor is cc’d, consider what they send to that student when other professors aren’t cc’d on the email.

I emailed a professor once apologizing for not submitting an assignment on time (it was 3 hours late) because my cat was dying and I was with him at the vet all weekend. He the read his email to his entire class and made fun of me. He replied to me and said he hopes my cats ok. Very nice on email but I had to drop his class since I lost all respect for him as a person.

My grandfather died, and when I emailed my professor asking if I could skip class to grieve and attend the funeral, he asked for proof of death. I had to get the dean involved because I thought it was normal to ask for that turns out it’s not.

Yes!! Like would you talk like this to a colleague?! If the answer is no, then why do you think it’s ok to say that to a student?

As a disabled student, I received endless rude, disrespectful, or inconsiderate emails. Emails outright denying reasonable approved accommodations (😬). Sending and evening emails was (and still is) a huge source of stress and anxiety for me. A little bit of empathy goes a long, long way. There’s a human that will be reading the message that is sent. I realize tone can be difficult to communicate, but deep down I think the majority of us know when we’re being snarky. It’s our job to be extra aware of that when we’re in positions of power 👀

Academia has gotten so self-centered. The professors have gotten dry.

As a PhD student overseeing undergrads and high school interns I get wild emails sometimes. I always correct them bc it’s better I do it than for them to get yelled at by a prof

Unfortunately “profs” can be pretty condescending at times. I signed up for this public speaking class taught by a lecturer and he asked if I had taken psych because I was bad at math. Such out of the blue statement. Frankly, he only has a masters so idk if I would really consider him a professor 🤔

I once emailed a professor to ask if I could use one of their classrooms as a green room for a project (they were their program/building coordinator) and closed my email with “all good if not, just let me know!”. He criticized that in his response and said that it was unecessary to add that because in the end it’s up to him he said I could use it but damn I was obviously not trying to be passive, just polite!

It’s always 100 level professors too. Like friend this is Algebra II. Let’s take a breath before we start making vague threats and wild leaps of what the future holds for students.

yesss i've never heard anyone talk about this! profs send emails that they'd never have the guts to say to someone's face. somehow they forget that we also have lives and feelings
