the first time I had to draw blood I GOT IT FIRST TRY! I was so proud I almost cried in front of the patient. the patient praised me for getting it first try as he hated getting sticked. I asked if I could tell him a secret. told him it was my first time. that man gave me a hug and a high five and told me he was proud of me. I was on could 9 all day!

Most new nurses that have this mentality seem to be more afraid of the social interaction between a patient and having to start an IV versus the actual IV itself.

As a nursing student in my last semester, about to graduate to an infant nurse in April and toddle my way through the hospital… I was scared for a second this would be different. And then I was cheering along with you at the end!

I’m an L&D patient, and I have to have weekly iron infusions, the unit has a lot of students right now. My veins are grade A for practise, so a student nurse did my line last week. She was so nervous, I was like “if you have to practise, mine are great! I get compliments every time I have to get bloodwork” (she did great!) afterwards she said I was her second ever, her first practise person (a family member) bled and bled and bled so she was super scared to do mine. I was like, nope, as a patient, you were great! (How are we gonna have amazing nurses if we aren’t being supportive!)
