@alexander_dahlgren_jawad: The internet is in full meltdown because someone painted their family room paneling. Sirens. Clutching pearls. Think pieces. Welcome to another episode of The Paint Saga, where I use 40 years of experience as a designer and builder to explain why design TikTok keeps oversimplifying everything. Painting paneling isn’t a crime — but it also isn’t the only option. In this episode, I break down what you can do instead of painting, when you should absolutely leave it alone, and why yelling “never paint it” is not the same thing as having taste. Design is contextual. Homes are meant to be lived in. #homedecor #painting #interiordesign #theancongroup

if someone painted the wood in that gilded age mansion, that would be upsetting. but someone painting 1980's panels? I don't think that's the enormous deal everyone made it out to be! Also, I love the way you explained the different possibilities here.

I’d like to go back in time and have a word with the person who painted the woodwork in our 1930’s home and replaced all the doors.

There’s a big difference between cheap fake wood paneling and genuine historic wood. If this were genuine and they had the budget to buy this house, why ruin its beautiful, original and rare wood features? There have to be other properties available, why buy a home with such beautiful character just to destroy it? There could’ve been so many alternative design choices that wouldn’t require painting over woodwork. 😑

The paneled living rooms are a dime a dozen where I live, most installed in the 80s. They end up looking great once painted! Some people have a style that suits them and they look very nice left as stained wood. But since most houses have them, having some variety is great.

I went for a classroom aesthetic instead. The color scheme is from the original tile in the foyer.

Saw that and thought the finished room was pretty. I’m sure as they live in it, they will add interesting finishings and accessories. Nothing wrong with taking your time.

I bought my house because I fell in love with the white painted paneling, just like they did. My house is bright, clean and sunny. I also have a lot of art, and I love feeling like I live in a gallery. I’m a thumbs up on what the panel painters did.

I think a good lesson here is knowing builder grade materials vs quality, custom materials and working with your home and not against it.

The bones of that second house are so bad, but so is most housing stock built after 1980. It’s so hard to decorate around that

Everything needs to look like an OR. (Actually, the prep room at City of Hope has warm comforting wooden panels. It was relaxing and lowers the stress level)

I’ve never loved it when people completely change the soul of a house. I grew up on a mid century modern street, original family. Through the 80’s, mostly, some people did everything they could to take that look out. Today the ones that remain intact are beautiful, the ones that were heavily remodeled look scarred.

How? Easily. But as you said, “budget is finite” and you wanted/needed to justify taking your chunk off the top.
