Why is it a Gen Z thing, we’ve been doing it in software engineering for ages. The etiquette is if someone has headphones on means they’re zoned deep into code, and DO NOT interrupt unless somethings on fire that’s needs immediate attention. For casual chats and questions wait for them to take the headphone off or message them on slack and wait for them to confirm if they can have a quick chat now. I’m 37, have been doing that since 2012. If you look at the movie Social Media you’d see Facebook back in 2005-2006 had similar unwritten rules in work space as well.

i listened to music in just 1 ear, my work actually improved cause i didn't have to listen to all of the small talk around the office, some time later and for some other reasons did i officially report my boss, we had a talk with everyone who needed to be there, she mentioned how i listened to music, everyone acted like the world was now ending 💀

I got reported for listening/watching (as they have reported) a Kdrama while getting my job done. I told them to just give me a memo or something since I don't bother to pass my resignation anytime.
