Scientists may have just done something that was considered impossible a few years ago. 🧬 Researchers in Japan used CRISPR gene editing to remove the extra chromosome 21 from cells of a person with Down syndrome. Not correct a gene. Not patch a mutation. Remove an entire extra chromosome. Down syndrome — or Trisomy 21 — occurs when a person is born with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. That extra copy affects development, cognition, and a range of biological processes throughout the body. Until now nobody had been able to target and eliminate it without damaging the other two. The technique they developed is called allele specific editing. It identifies tiny DNA differences unique to the extra chromosome and cuts only that one — leaving the other two completely untouched. Once cut the damaged chromosome becomes unstable and disappears naturally during cell division. What happened after was remarkable. Inflammation markers dropped. Metabolism genes shifted toward normal levels. Brain development genes increased. Cell division patterns normalized. Now for the honest part. This happened in lab cultured cells — not in a living patient. Turning this into an actual treatment would require editing nearly every cell in the body at the earliest stages of development with zero margin for error. We are years away from any clinical application and there are significant ethical questions that still need to be worked through. But as a proof of concept? This is one of the most significant breakthroughs in genetic medicine we have ever seen. 🙏 Vid: Unknown ✅Follow @drdavidabbasi for More Daily Medical Content & Health Tips!🌴😷Schedule a consultation in Delray Beach!
