This is how dementia works because they keep going back to longtime memory because they are not able to stay on topic because they can’t in the moment remember what the question was in the first place. So instead they go on a rant about something unrelated that happened years and years ago. My gramps had dementia due to several strokes and this was exactly how he acted while fast declining in his condition
