@aye_nee: This is coming from someone who does value and encourage the development of these skills. I think many people would benefit from reading higher quality books or diversifying their reading. But reading Dostoyevsky doesn’t make you better than someone who reads Colleen Hoover. You may be a more proficient reader, but that’s all. It’s also perfectly valid if the development of those skills isn’t your goal or priority with reading, and instead you’re looking for lighthearted escapism or fun. #booktokbooks #literacycrisis #antiintellectualism
Perfectly said. I couldn’t have said it better myself. The irony is that identifying what is going to be “a good book” is also a skill and it’s clearly a skill a lot of people do not have since they keep, to quote, “falling for shit recommendations on booktok”. I think people need to take responsibility for the media they consume.
