We can acknowledge Australia’s history and still celebrate modern Australia — the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Every country has a complicated past, and Australia Day marks the founding of the nation, not an endorsement of everything that happened afterward. Changing the date doesn’t change history, it just changes a public holiday. You don’t build unity by removing shared traditions, and symbolic gestures don’t create real change — action does. It’s possible to love your country, be honest about its past, and still be proud of what Australia is today.
