so how do musicians manage to pay attention to the notes and conductor at the same time?

non musicians don’t realize that we are constantly interpreting the body language of the conductor, hence why it’s not just a standard 4 pattern all the time. A great orchestra can read the kind of attack the conductor wants in a split second

Non musicians will never understand the NEED for conductors. We can usually see them from our peripheral vision which helps with cues and helps us with tempo if we’re lost, for example, the counting change can also be a checkpoint.

a conductors work is 90% spent in rehearsal. so you don’t really see what they do.

For none musician this must be so confusing!! As a brass bander at least it’s conducted clear as day (mainly because of the accuracy needed for contests) but it’s refreshing to see the conductor trusting his musicians

In fact, no musician pays attention to the conductor; apart from the beginning and end, the rest of the score is clearly indicated.

The conductor is essential to the orchestra. They can watch for tempo changes, keeps you from dragging or rushing the beat. If you lose your place, you can watch for cues. If you need to play louder or softer…it’s an art in and of itself.

"How about I take marking the beat, the thing about music that needs to be the most consistent and visible for the orchestra, and make it essentially random?"

as a sax player, having a conductor does help with emotion, and for me as timing, there are things within our music where we do need to look at the conductor if we need to hold a note longer, take a breath, and other things like that

That's how it works? I thought you're just waving and signaling which instrument to go next.

I’m curious, how do the musicians know what the conductor wants, like when to play softer or louder, when their eyes are mostly focused on the sheet music?

All I know is that I could have been a conductor. Like, this kind, not the kind for electricity.

“Conductors are essential” this and “conductors” that. If I learned anything from my conducting classes, it’s this: Nobody in that orchestra is watching that conductor. If you listen close enough, they are slightly off on a few beats compared to what he’s conducting. At this high of a musical level, that would never happen. Instead. What’s going on is that he is making far too many unnecessary movements. Sure, a conductor can portray feeling and intent with body language, but this is absurd. Thus, nobody is paying attention to him. Look at the principal violinist. His eyes never left the music stand. Hence, he isn’t listening and likely the entire band is focusing only on the principal violinist.
