After 8 years in physician relations, I’ve learned that being likable is only part of the equation. Don’t get me wrong, people do business with people they know, like, and trust. Being personable matters. Building genuine relationships matters. But I’ve seen plenty of well-liked liaisons struggle to grow referrals. Why? Because providers aren’t referring patients based solely on who they enjoy talking to. They’re referring to the people and organizations they trust to take care of their patients. Trust is built when you: ✔️ Do what you say you’re going to do. ✔️ Follow up when everyone else forgets. ✔️ Communicate clearly. ✔️ Solve problems. ✔️ Become a resource instead of just making visits. ✔️ Stay consistent long after the first introduction. Being likable might get you the meeting. Being reliable is what gets you invited back. And trust is what ultimately drives referrals. If you’re new to physician relations, focus less on being the most outgoing person in the room and more on becoming someone providers can count on.
