When it comes to picking a partner for life, there are a lot of factors that should influence that decision. Marriage is a big thing. The statistics show that 90% of us will get up on an alter by age 50 and make a pledge that we’re going to be with this person through thick and thin, and only give ourselves to them sexually. In our view, the biggest factor when picking a partner is if you are aligned with your spiritual beliefs and core values. Judging their character, their compatibility with your personality, if they would be a good parent, and if you have a foundation of a good friendship, are also things that are very important. But you could still have all those things, and NOT be attracted to that person. This matters deeply, given that sex is at least one third of the equation when it comes to a relationship (emotional, sexual, spiritual). You’re not obligated to marry someone just because they check all those boxes. In-fact, maybe that person would serve better as a close friend. Being attracted to your partner can be somewhat of a controversial topic, and the problem with discussing it is quite simple. Honesty. Most people would never outwardly admit that they are not attracted to their partner, and most people don’t feel comfortable discussing their sex life with anyone. So no matter what we see on social media, or even what people tell us, it is extremely hard to verify if a couple has a healthy sex life. They could check all the boxes above, and still have difficulty with sex because of attraction. Few people are in position to judge if attraction matters more than a sex therapist. So in Episode 14 of the Mighty Pursuit Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Ian Kerner, one of the most recognizable voices in sex science. Over the last 30 years, Kerner has worked with thousands of patients in his clinical practice and has successfully helped both individuals and couples. He can personally attest to this subject, and has seen a dramatic rise in younger generations that discounting of attraction in marriage and experience sex ruts.
