I’m always telling people downhill is actually harder on your body 😂

I'm a person of size, and I hike a lot. My key to downhill is to bend my knees slightly (a very slight crouch), and never lock out. That way, the muscles catch your weight--not your joints.

I usually just run down. Stretch and mobility at the bottom and I feel fine. I hike weekly and at 51 have strong knees.

I love running down after a hike up and I don't usually hurt after. Is this bad for me?

I deliver mail on many hills and go straight up and then down sideways/at an angle. It helps a ton. I keep my knees relaxed and that does as well.

Not to mention the pressure on your toes against the front of your boot when descending…my least favorite part

I’ve always been a hiker and I asked a friend who owns a gym once why there wasn’t a machine like the stair master - but that goes down. He was perplexed at the idea. I explained why and he said no one had ever asked him anything like that before. It’s a different set of muscles. They need to be exercised and trained as well.

What do you think about using trekking poles in general for hiking?

I trail run and you should avoid running down a hill. It’s really hard on your back. The impact on your spine and knees is very noticeable. I accidentally ran down a small hill without thinking. I had dull pain on my hip for almost a year. It’s not worth it.

Mannnnn I’m here in Florida. There is no uphill or downhill, just sugar sand. Any tips on sugar sand?
