I know this is a weird one. I don't usually do contemporary games, and I've never done a VR game, but this game is not only inspired by one of, if not the original text adventure, Colossal Cave, it was also designed by one of the most legendary adventure game creators of all time, Roberta Williams. If you don't know who Roberta Williams is, she was the co-founder of Sierra On-Line, the company that pioneered the modern graphical adventure game. From the history I've read, Roberta was inspired to make her own game after playing Colossal Cave - the text adventure - so it's all kind of tracking. Is it a good VR game? I don't think so. It's interesting. There is a regular 3D version that's probably less awkward. I guess they just tried to get on the VR bandwagon, but it's not a good fit in my opinion. I'm not a VR doomer either, I just think some things are better off not VR. I'll still play this one to the end, though. Some facts: The original Colossal Cave Adventure was created by Will Crowther in the 1970s and later expanded by Don Woods. It's one of the foundational games in the entire adventure genre, and its influence is kind of ridiculous when you think about how much came after it. And here's where the whole thing comes full circle. Roberta Williams played the original Colossal Cave and was fascinated by it, but she wanted to actually see the world she was exploring. That helped inspire her to create Mystery House with Ken Williams in 1980, one of the earliest graphical adventure games, and from there came Sierra On-Line, King's Quest, and a huge chunk of adventure game history. Then, more than 40 years later, Roberta and Ken came out of retirement and recreated the game that helped start the whole thing for them, this time as an actual 3D world you can walk around in. That's pretty damn cool regardless of what I think of the VR implementation. The regular 3D version came out in January 2023, while the separate PC VR version followed in June. The remake keeps a lot of the strange old-school adventure design of the original, including the maze-like cave, inventory management, dwarves, treasures, puzzles, and the general expectation that you're going to figure this stuff out yourself. So underneath all the modern graphics, this thing has some seriously ancient video game DNA. #VirtualReality #PCGaming #AdventureGames #RetroGaming #ColossalCave
