💔 **What do you see?** You see a water bottle. Just an ordinary water bottle that keeps someone hydrated. But do you want to know what I see? I see a water bottle that was forgotten at the end of summer and was supposed to be returned to its owner in the fall. I see grief. Not just the grief of the staff, but most importantly, the grief of parents who have to live with the unimaginable loss of their child. I see a reminder of a father whose son will never bring coffee to his office again. 💔 In my field of work, we receive at least one email a year informing us that a student has passed away. I hear stories about teachers losing students, but a week ago, I experienced the loss of a student for the first time myself. When I was told the news, I cracked jokes in the office. I actually felt bad that I wasn't crying at that moment. But when I returned to my classroom, it finally hit me. That's when the grief caught up with me. And then there was this water bottle. I had been thinking about throwing it away, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It hit me that this bottle represented our hope of seeing this child again. We were supposed to return it to its owner in the fall. Now, it's just a lonely water bottle sitting there, reminding me of the hope we had, the grief we feel, and the anger that comes with losing someone far too soon. Life isn't fair. Sometimes, things don't turn out the way we hope or expect. We are all guests on this earth, and we never know how much time we have. So, the next time you see something that seems insignificant to you, whether it's a water bottle or a bag of cheese balls, please remember that it might mean something much deeper to someone else. You never know what memories are attached to an ordinary object. You never know what someone is holding on to as they try to process their grief. **Sometimes, it's not just a water bottle. It's a memory. It's hope. It's love. And now, it's grief.** 💔 Hug your loved ones a little tighter. Life is fragile, and sometimes, we don't realize how much the little things mean until they're all we have left. #grief #smallthingsmatter #justawaterbottle #studentloss #yetiewaterbottle
