interference of light is the physical phenomenon in which two or more coherent light waves superpose, resulting in a new distribution of light intensity in space. At points where the waves meet in the same phase, their amplitudes add constructively, producing bright maxima. At points where they meet in opposite phase, they cancel each other destructively, producing dark minima. The essential condition for interference is "coherence". The phase difference between the interfering waves must remain constant over time. Conventional light sources, such as incandescent bulbs or sunlight, emit random, discontinuous wave trains, making them incoherent. Therefore, interference is achieved either by splitting a single beam from one source into two paths and then recombining them, or by using lasers, which naturally emit highly coherent light. Mathematically, interference is described by the superposition of amplitudes. For two waves of equal amplitude *A* and a phase difference *Δφ* at a given point, the resulting intensity *I* is given by: *I = 2I₀ (1 + cos Δφ)* This leads to two extreme cases: - If *Δφ = 0, 2π, 4π, ...* (waves are in phase), then *I = 4I₀* — a constructive maximum occurs. - If *Δφ = π, 3π, 5π, ...* (waves are in opposite phase), then *I = 0* — a destructive minimum occurs. In practice, an interference pattern typically appears as a sequence of alternating bright and dark fringes. Classic demonstrations include Young's double-slit experiment, where light passing through two narrow slits produces parallel fringes on a screen, and Newton's rings, observed in the thin air gap between a convex lens and a flat glass plate. A crucial point is that interference does not create or destroy light energy. It merely redistributes it in space. Energy that disappears at the minima is transferred to adjacent maxima, so the total energy of the system remains conserved. This phenomenon has extensive practical applications. It underpins interferometers, which are instruments used for ultra-precise measurements of wavelengths, refractive indices, and tiny displacements.
