I grew up hiking back east all the time, and hiking out here is something completely different. People really have no idea. It took me one time of nearly running out of water at South Coyote Buttes to never risk that again.

We were on another hike in Utah, following an AllTrails map. Came up to a steep cliff edge. Map said to continue but like you said, we were on the wrong level! Hiking in canyon areas is a totally different ball game.

Hi, glad I found your post. looks like a good hike, I'd like to do this with my wife. I agree with you that lot of people don't do enough research on hikes. I'd also recommend the ranger guided hike for beginners. That being said, I was just trying having a friendly conversation about all the tools available to people. There are so many tools available and they are constantly changing.

Also my first time hiking backcountry with people who didn’t grow up doing it was EYE opening. Friends wanted to go to Yosemite and I was like okay! One of my friends didn’t bring a backpack but only a satchel water bottle holder. I commented on it and she was like I think it’ll be fine 🫠 luckily the park is basically Disneyland these days. But she admitted at the end that she should’ve been more prepared. I was taught to bring water for yourself and emergencies, food. Etc

100% I grew up hiking with a backpacking uncle in SoCal. I love it but it’s so much prep to do hikes like these so I stick to ones I have cell service at or popular ones in Yosemite etc. I heard you and was like wow that’s not for me! There’s easier rocky hikes here.

There isn’t a trail map on PURPOSE people. 😂 You literally have to watch a safety video before doing Fiery Furnace, lol.
