In the video, a heated insulated metal cup is used to melt a circular opening through the drum head material. Most drum heads are made from Mylar, a polyester film that softens and melts when exposed to high heat, allowing a hot metal edge to cut and lightly seal the rim at the same time. When done carefully with the head removed from the drum, this can create a smooth edge that is less likely to tear, although mistakes can cause warped film, uneven holes, or permanent damage to the head. Despite the DIY approach working in some cases, there are purpose built tools that produce cleaner and safer results. Bass drum port hole cutters from companies like Remo and Evans use guided circular blades and often include a reinforcing ring to strengthen the edge and prevent splitting over time.
