You hit on two issues here. Engineering that does not think about repairs and car manufacturers that squeeze their parts suppliers on cost and therefore they get the garbage parts that they pay for.

Why are you doing it the hard way? The thing goes in as an assembly. The thing comes out as an assembly. I work at a GM dealership. We pull them out as solid assemblies. You know the old adage works smarter not harder.

As a retired engineer, a seal on a largely inaccessible heater core is a fraud move. There is no reason for this.
