And here’s why that matters. In a child who had not yet reached puberty, this type of injury is rare and highly specific. It is not caused by bubble baths. It is not caused by wiping incorrectly. It is not caused by normal childhood activity. This injury was older than 10 days, meaning it occurred before the night she died. And this was not one doctor’s opinion. A panel of five nationally recognized child abuse experts reviewed the medical evidence. Four of the five — Dr. Andrew Sirotnak, Dr. John McCann, Dr. James Monteleone, and Dr. Valerie Rao — were confident the findings were diagnostic of abuse. They specifically identified a transection at the “7 o’clock” position of the hymenal rim — an injury they stated is nearly impossible to explain through accidental causes such as bike riding, gymnastics, hygiene, or normal childhood play. The fifth expert, Dr. Richard Krugman, agreed the findings indicated physical abuse of the genitals, but he was cautious, saying he could not definitively label it S abuse without the victim’s testimony or the presence of seaman. This wasn’t speculation. This was based on anatomy, injury pattern, and medical science. Dr. John McCann — the same physician who helped establish the medical standards for what is considered normal in children — agreed with this conclusion. Now add this detail. On December 17th, just nine days before JonBenét was killed, Patsy Ramsey made three after-hours calls to JonBenét’s pediatrician: 6:28 PM 6:50 PM 6:59 PM Those calls are documented fact. The pediatrician himself confirmed them to detectives Mike Kane and Tom Haney during a 1998 interview. And Patsy later said she had no memory of making those calls. Some people try to suggest Patsy’s mother, Nedra Paugh, made them — but that is not possible. Nedra Paugh was not in the Ramsey home on December 17th. She and her husband were there earlier in the month — on December 7th and 8th — not the 17th. So when people say, “There’s no proof of prior abuse,” they aren’t arguing with opinions. They are arguing with documented medical findings and the unanimous conclusions of leading child abuse specialists.
