Certified herbalist and own an apothecary… you do not need to steep herbs for 4 hours. Most take as little as 6 minutes. There’s also a difference between tea, infusions, decoctions, and tinctures.

This is a significant oversimplification. Long steeps are needed for mineral dense, fibrous plants like nettle or oat straw, but many plants release their medicine quickly and are harmed by long infusions, petals and mints, for example will lose potency and get bitter. Please stop telling people this.

As a seasoned herbalist, I'm glad you mentioned you're a beginner. I REALLY wish you'd have been more specific (I saw you mentioned in another comment, you should have used the term infusions, which I agree with, you're definitely describing infusions in your vid). As a generalization, this can be true, but it is just that- a generalization, which can end up hurting people, especially those who are new to consuming plant medicine. Many plants will cause digestive upset SO FAST if you make an infusion, yet cure a litany of symptoms as a tea. It all depends on what the goal of consumption is.

I wish it was that simple lol. All herbs are not created equal. Yess, this is true for SOME herbs but not all teas or infusions should be steeped for 4+ hours 🥰

Hey! It's Becky :
each herb, plant, flower, leaf releases its nutrients and minerals at different speeds. For a technique your mentioning aka Long-Infusion is only required for certain herbs, plants, leaves and not all. In fact, some would burn and sour if you steep them too long. There are charts online everywhere I'm sure to check which ones require 4hr min. Most are 10 min though, especially when tea formulas are concerned. An add on to what you're saying: you need to drink at least 3 cups as well to get a therapeutic dosage in most cases as well.

Many herbs lose nutrients if steeped with boiling water. Room temp filtered, distilled or spring water does great!

Does it have to be steeped in warm water for that long? Or can it continue to steep as the water cools?

Ya not true, most vitamins will have degraded by heating that long. If it’s minerals you want then make a vinegar extract.

That’s why I had to prep my herbal teas days before a cleanse. Whenever I did it the same day, it wasn’t as strong.
