Stand deep near the glass, not in the middle — mid-court is the dead zone where every smash finds your feet. Let the glass do the work: instead of volleying desperation balls, let them pass, come off the wall, and play the calm rebound. When you answer, lob high and cross-court, because the diagonal buys you time and drops the ball far from their overhead. Read the smasher's shoulders, not the ball — the shoulder line tells you the direction early enough to move before contact. And remember you don't need a winner to escape, just height: one good deep lob pushes them back and lets you and your partner climb back to the net.
