@coyote.wildflowers: It was too haunting for me not to paint this bird and its final calls. I wonder what it must be like to be the last? Endling: a word used for the last animal of a species. It means it is the final living individual of that species. Its a poignant reminder of how delicate nature is in our hands. #exctinctspecies #fantasyart #digitalart

This is the bird they’re talking about. A lot of our native birds is close to extinction mainly due invasive species introduced to Hawaii like mosquitos, cats and habitat destruction. Good news though, they recently released the Hawaiian crow (alalā) who was extinct in the wild but now are slowly being reintroduced back close to Haleakala for conservation efforts, I think around 7 got released and 110 is still in captivity

we are in an active extinction event, the halocene/anthropocene extinction, which is primarily being caused by human activities. it is not *currently* a mass extinction, but we are barrelling towards it. the pain of the endlings will continue to be felt unless our species changes course.
