If for a woman, fur was not just an item of clothing, but a means of expressing her sensuality, power, and self-confidence, the aggressive nature of anti-fur campaigns effectively disrupted this channel of expression. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a form of repression or censorship of sexuality through the following mechanisms: 1. Fur as a symbol of "Glamour" and Seduction. Historically, in cinema and pop culture, fur has been associated with the figure of the femme fatale and a strong, brazen, and sexually aware femininity (think of icons like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor). The impact of the movement: Demonizing this garment meant attacking the visual archetype of seduction associated with that luxury. The consequence: Many women stopped wearing it to avoid public pillorying, giving up a tool with which they visibly displayed their erotic charge and allure. 2. "Slut-Shaming" Turned On Its Head: Fetish and Shame Some currents of ecofeminism have highlighted how anti-fur activists have often used a moralistic rhetoric reminiscent of slut-shaming (the act of shaming a woman for her sexual behavior). Women in fur were portrayed as "superficial," "vain," or "insensitive," labels historically used to repress women who freely expressed their desires and their bodies. Associating a symbol of sensuality with cruelty and blood generated a strong psychological conflict: the pleasure and excitement associated with the act of dressing and pleasing oneself were replaced by guilt and the fear of verbal abuse. 3. Losing Control Over One's Body: Sexual freedom for women inevitably comes through bodily autonomy, that is, the right to decide how to present one's body in public. When anti-fur groups threw red paint on furs or insulted passers-by, they were committing an act of psychological (and sometimes physical) violence against women's bodies. This intrusion forced many women to "cover up" or conform to more neutral and mass-acceptable clothing standards, a mechanism that historically mirrors the processes of puritanism and repression of female visibility. In short, if we understand sexuality not only as a physical act, but as eroticism, self-esteem, and the display of one's body, anti-fur activism undoubtedly exerted censorious pressure, depriving many women of a powerful means of self-expression. #pellicce #pelz #fourrure #abrigodepiel #nofurban @European Parliament
