I have always wondered if the smaller bakeries make better tarts - so I put my money where my mouth is and ordered and tried 27 kinds of pineapple tarts. I paid for all the tarts so that I could be entirely unbiased and I asked all of you via social media for recommendations. Some of the tarts I ordered did not arrive in time, therefore, they were left out of the taste test. My personal favourites from past years did not make the cut so thank you to everyone who sent in their recs! They were great! And here are the top 5 pineapple tarts! 5th Place Nesuto Brown Butter Plain Vanilla, $26.51 @dear.nesuto They have 3 kinds of pineapple tarts, yuzu and hojicha being the other variants. The pastry on this was really very good but the 5th placing was because the pineapple jam was just a little lacking that aromatic boost which makes a pineapple tart truly great. 4th Place Le Cafe, $38 @lecafe_sg These were massive. They are also called their golf ball tarts - I can see why. They were surprisingly good, there was a lot of jam which was tart and chunky. The pastry was thin and expertly wrapped around the jam but just not buttery and short enough for me. 3rd Place Krumb, $26 @krumb.sg This tart had a good pastry, flakey and short, and a good pineapple jam. Overall a good tart but just not THE best. If I had to nitpick, I would just say that the pineapple filling was a touch too sweet. 2nd Place Whiskdom, $24.48 @whiskdom This was a tough call, trying to decide why this was second place versus FIRST. Pastry was great, buttery and toasty (indicating that was baked perfectly), the jam was tart and sweet. But it lost out by a hair because of the pineapple filling which could have been a little more textured. 1st Place Tan Lee Eng Pineapple Tarts, $45 @tanleeengpineappletarts The winner because it is the perfect balance of buttery richness with the foil of the tart sweet pineapple. The texture was just perfect - juicy chunks of pineapple. The gentle spice aroma off the jam was just so heady and perfumed that every bite was a delight. My favourite out of all the tarts but this result is really my personal opinion - so peace out and enjoy your pineapple tarts! - @chefshentan
