Solmarids are a family of hydrozoans, typically dome-shaped with wispy tentacles set above the undulating margin of their bells. ⁠ ⁠ Most species of swimming jellies are Hydromedusae. These jellies are often small and transparent, with few to many tentacles. Some species in this group have a small polyp stage called a hydroid. ⁠ ⁠ Some Hydromedusae have tentacles that point ahead of them instead of trailing behind them as they swim. These species eat other gelatinous organisms rather than the crustaceans favored by many of their cousins. But even with all this diversity, we have yet to encounter many of the delicate drifters that live in the deepest waters of our vast ocean. #DeepSea #DeepOcean #MBARI
