South Sudan Rejects Sudan’s Objection to Abyei’s Inclusion in December 2026 Elections JUBA, South Sudan – 17 July 2026: The Government of the Republic of South Sudan has formally rejected Sudan’s objection to the inclusion of residents of the Abyei Administrative Area in South Sudan’s general elections scheduled for 22 December 2026, saying the participation of Abyei residents is based on clear legal and constitutional grounds. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the ministry’s spokesperson, Ambassador Apuk Anyar Madut, said South Sudan found it unusual that Sudan had issued a public statement and raised complaints with the United Nations and regional bodies instead of using established diplomatic channels. The ministry said the inclusion of Abyei residents is supported by the Abyei Protocol under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), as well as the 2005 Transitional Constitutions of Sudan and South Sudan, and the 2011 Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan and its amendments. According to the statement, these legal frameworks guarantee the rights of Abyei residents, including members of the nine Ngok Dinka chiefdoms, to citizenship and political participation. The ministry added that Abyei residents also participated in South Sudan’s 2010 elections without objections, arguing that their inclusion in the 2026 elections represents a continuation of an existing constitutional and electoral practice. The South Sudanese government reaffirmed its commitment to achieving a peaceful and lasting solution to the Abyei dispute through dialogue and negotiations, while appreciating the efforts of the African Union, United Nations, and international partners in supporting a peaceful settlement.
