Palm Coast, Florida — A 52-year-old elementary school teacher has been arrested after allegedly physically mistreating a six-year-old student with special needs inside a classroom. Kevin Adkisson, who worked at Wadsworth Elementary School, faces two felony counts of child ab¥se without great bodily harm following an investigation by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. According to investigators, the incident happened October 16 when two students began arguing over a toy. A classroom paraprofessional told investigators that Adkisson forcefully took the toy, pushed one child and grabbed the student by the arm in a rough motion that caused the child's body to swing through the air. The teacher allegedly shouted that the child was "acting like a two-year-old." The frightened student reportedly crawled underneath a desk and began crying. Investigators said Adkisson later moved the desk, grabbed the child again and pinned him against a classroom wall, restricting his movement. A witness told investigators she heard the child crying and saying he was being hurt and could not breathe. The investigation also uncovered a separate allegation that Adkisson had previously struck the child's stomach with closed hands and picked him up after a disagreement over standing in line. Sheriff Rick Staly said: "Parents entrust teachers to provide a safe learning environment for their children. Some special needs students can be challenging but everyone who works with these children must always keep their cool," Adkisson was arrested October 22 and released on a $5,000 bond. A judge also issued a no-contact order preventing him from contacting the student and the witness. The school district placed him on administrative leave and said it was cooperating with authorities. However, his defense attorney disputes the charges and says his client expects to be found innocent. Adkisson is scheduled to appear in court November 17. The allegations have not yet been proven. #PalmCoast #Florida #KevinAdkisson #USA #japd
