@justamumxoxo: Millennial house regret!! 🏡 Kinda been out here feeling like it’s just me but tonight it’s all that’s been in my feed so I feel so seen right now 🫶🏼 I just wish I could go back and start again, do it all over differently & be in such a better position today. So many young people in my feed saving for their first home & I just want to shake them and tell them to go learn, read, listen & absorb everythinggggg first! 💰💵 Do you have millennial house regret, are you saving for your first home (& plan to live in it) or are you neither, maybe you are a long term renter by choice & invest those $$$ - props to you, you are the winner! 👏🏼 #housepoor #millennial #firsthomebuyer #investor #financialeducation
I think you haven’t rented enough to feel the gratitude you should have for being in your own home. Our PPOR isn’t a financial investment only. It’s stability and security which isn’t measured by the number of bedrooms or bathrooms. Try having to move your entire home annually bc landlords want to sell, renovate etc. you would be begging for your own space. Enjoy what you have, many would love to be in ur position

Bought our first house late 20s and still here 20yrs later. Was meant to be our starter house and is now our forever home due to life circumstances. Just thankful we have a stable roof over our head.

People need to stop obsessing over buying property. If they did the numbers, they would realise that renting and then dedicating that cashflow into a leveraged stock portfolio puts one in a much better financial position than mortgaged property. People who say rent money is dead money forget to take into account that buying with a mortgage is essentially renting money where the interest adds no value to the property.

The housing market is a scam. It’s just a way for banks and government to make money. Better off investing in shares. Mine are up 3x since covid like most other shares. Houses sink way too much money and the growth isn’t even that good

I bought my house 4 years ago and I’m in the opposite situation. Home value has doubled since I bought it. If I sold now I could pay the mortgage, be debt free and have a 40% deposit for another house

I bought a two bedroom unit in inner city Melbourne. It's doubled in value since i bought it. I'm tempted to sell it and buy a 1 bedroom, a bit further out. That would allow me to be mortgage free.

I've never understood the idea of a "starter home". I bought what/where I could afford and made my life here. I'm 38 and just paid it off zero regrets. it's small but that's all I need 🥰

We moved to and bought a house in WA… we now don’t want to stay here… it’s such a pain in the arse looking at going back east having to sell here and buy there. When we moved here we were renting over east so we just got up and left. Can’t do that now.

We did a Reno and flipped it- made $130 grand profit 2020… built one and sold it Made a huge $65000 profit 2024. Then just now built our dream home. We have luckily sold at the right timings! We are 40 and grateful with our moves 🥰

We are in the same boat 🥺. Bought top of the melb market in 2021, 2br to do a Reno. Reno $$ went crazy so havent committed to them and now need more space. No capital gains due to market dropping and need more space 🫣

We’re about to buy our first home at 30. This makes me so scared why do you regret this home?

Why do you think it's naive to assume the house you buy at 29 will be your forever home? Plenty of people I know have only ever bought one house and will likely never buy another or will not downsize until they are retired/elderly.

I didnt buy and no regrets. 👍 We are in a rental but not really attached to any area, the freedom was worth more to us.

I think a lot of millennials made money with low interest rates and capital growth but your lesson was you over capitalised. Stay positive at the end of the day we are all on a journey and you’re young enough to make mistakes. I got divorced and had to sell and rebuild. It’s shit but you come out the other side better for it.

It’s all about location, and yes as you mentioned, spending too much on it

We bought in 2017 at 25. Built house and land package. We are still here at 34. We don’t love the area but the house if big enough for kids we are now have the issue of if we move we are priced out of the area for what a bank will loan us 🤣😅 so we would have to go further out which makes work commute so much longer and not worth it

I’m 41. Still in the house we bought when I was 24. 3 kids later. It’s not the best layout and could do with a spare bedroom but it works well enough. We are so close to our kids school and the area itself is good so we don’t want to move unless we can find exactly what we want in this area.

I’m still in the same house for 25 years. I hate it. But at least the mortgage is low.

I have this. About to sell and put the proceeds into diversified investments. The obsession this country has with home ownership is crazy

Yes! We bought before getting married 9 years ago. Bought what we could afford without stretching ourselves thin with the thought that we will save up and get a house in 5yrs instead. Well c# ruined that but are very thankful to atleast have had a home and not worry about renting and grateful we bought based on what one income would afford. Now we can’t justify buying a house. Looking at how we can make our townhouse more homely and it probably will be our mostly forever home!

Yes, I regret buying my first home. Purchased during the pandemic (2021) in Melbourne when there was a ‘boom’ which has since softened. Had FOMO at the time, not many places were being put on the market, and there was a lot of competition. If we had waited, could have spent less money. Our place is fine, but it’s not our forever home and now is worth less than we paid for it. The only thing that is fortunate is that we will buy a similar home, just in a different configuration. It will suck having to pay all the purchasing costs again.
