it's glaringly obvious what the venue is trying to pull here. If they wanted OP to release the date then they should be compensating him for releasing it. They 100% wanted to be double paid for the space.

I would’ve understood if they had kept the deposit because usually the deposit is nonrefundable. But the second venue asked you to release the date. They should give you back everything but the deposit.

Essentially OP was trying to sell back his date and they weren’t willing to buy it so obviously the other client wasn’t worth it to them. They still would’ve made out ahead and they chose not to so they can be the destruction in their own world

NTA the venues own policy screwed them, they should have used some common sense and it would have been fine. But definitely not the AH, he can use the space he paid for for anything he wants

I would Love to know who's upset at him for keeping the venue. I'm not only absolutely keeping the space if they're refunding nothing, but I'm leaving reviews online everywhere I can and sharing my story.

I had a similar issue with a venue. we were able to get the nicer place across town a week before I got married. venue said no refunds that close to the date. had the original place booked for 2 days. so we were just going to keep it empty. place rented it out to another couple last minute for triple what I paid. wound up taking them to court. in the end thay paid me back what I paid plus double what the other couple paid as punitive damages plus legal fees and whatnot.

If you pay for a service, you have every legal right...to USE that service. How is that even a question?? Keeping your full payment and then trying to pressure you out of your reserved time and space is toeing the line of illegal
