Psychologically, THIS CONFRONTS the part of me that wants SPIRITUAL ELEVATION WITHOUT HUMAN VULNERABILITY. I CANNOT LOVE THE WORD MADE FLESH WHILE TREATING MY OWN HUMANITY—or SOMEBODY ELSE'S—as an EMBARRASSMENT. The Trinity DRAWS ME TOWARD a mystery of BEING ITSELF: UNITY WITHOUT ISOLATION, DISTINCTION WITHOUT SEPARATION. I RECEIVE THIS... not as permission to reduce three persons to three pieces of my psyche, but AS AN INVITATION TO QUESTION WHY I KEEP CONFUSING WHOLENESS WITH BEING ALONE. The INNER PATH, as I understand it, MOVES THROUGH CLEARING, SEEING, and COMMUNION. Not three trophies. Not a ladder on which I become superior. REPENTANCE... CLEARS the room. ILLUMINATION... REVEALS what I kept stepping over. UNION... TEACHES me that surrender IS NOT self-hatred, and INTIMACY WITH GOD is NOT becoming God by nature. The ego that MUST DIE is NOT my capacity to be a person. IT IS MY INSISTENCE THAT my fear, appetite, and need for control SHOULD GOVERN the whole house. GRACE DOES NOT ERASE THE HUMAN BEING. It LOOSENS the fist. IN STILLNESS, I STOP demanding that EVERY SILENCE produce an answer. In SACRED reading, I ALLOW THE TEXT TO READ ME. IN SURRENDER, I OFFER MY WILL rather than pretending I never had one.
