I am an aerospace engineer and have so much hope for our future in space. But this WILL be fully commercialized. It will not be a utopia, it will be more like the towns built around a coal mine. The people who live here will be dependent on SpaceX for everything. They are coming to Mars for resource claiming purposes, not because they want to help humanity to the stars. This becomes a stepping stone for more missions just like that, and suddenly SpaceX owns the market for so many future resources and services. Every problem with Earth and society, beyond ecological disaster, will be on Mars, but worse tenfold, since SpaceX (driven by profits and profits ONLY) will be in full control of that. It sounds like a utopia, but I assure you it will not be. Like I said, it will end up like Appalachian coal mine abandoned towns. Great at first, the rest is history.
