On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb, code-named Fat Man, on Nagasaki, Japan, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. The bomb detonated at approximately 11:02 a.m., devastating much of the city and killing tens of thousands of people. By the end of 1945, an estimated 70,000 people in Nagasaki had died from the blast, burns, injuries, and radiation exposure. The bombing came as Japan was nearing the end of World War II and remains one of the most consequential and controversial events of the twentieth century. Historians continue to debate the bombing’s role in Japan’s decision to surrender, particularly alongside the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan. The destruction of Nagasaki, however, marked a turning point in the history of warfare and inaugurated the nuclear age, with consequences that continue to shape international politics and the world’s understanding of nuclear weapons. August 9, 2026, marks 81 years since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Follow for more historical footage.
