@bonemuseum: We’re often asked how we would feel if it were our bodies on display in the museum. Today, we’re sharing the answer: when the opportunity presents itself, we do keep parts of ourselves in the collection. These are the tonsils of the Bone Museum’s current managing director, preserved after his tonsillectomy and now formally accessioned for display. Like many historical medical specimens, they were preserved not for spectacle, but for study and education. The tonsils are shown using two common tissue-preservation techniques. The first is wax (paraffin) embedding, a process that stabilizes soft tissue so it can be cut into ultra-thin sections without damaging its structure. This method is fundamental in histology and pathology, allowing scientists and students to examine tissue organization at a microscopic level. The second is a dyed microscopic slide, created by staining those thin sections with dyes that bind to specific cellular components. Staining makes otherwise transparent tissue visible, highlighting structures like nuclei, connective tissue, blood vessels, and immune cells, details that are essential for diagnosis and research. At the Bone Museum we believe in open accessibility. These tonsils are not anonymous, they belong to someone who chose to contribute their own body to the museum’s mission of making the study of osteology more accessible.

Just a fellow adult who also had their tonsils out when I was 26. Ouch! But, years later totally worth it. No more strep for me!

You’re doing great for 2-weeks of healing. I suffered for 3 weeks before feeling any sense of good.

If my bones could further education, I don't care if they were displayed. even if it was too further, other people's curiosity, maybe that person's curiosity as a child / young adult would grow into a doctor/scientist. it would be like giving back to the community after i'm dead.

I tried to donate. I am disabled with spine issues. But the truth is that many people are dealing with pain and deformities of the spine. Some people are going on with their lives like nothing ever happened. Where do you meet and if you need a place, let this be your bulletin board!
