@coastal_cowgirl5: Moving slow matters. When you ask your horse to work at a slow, controlled pace, you’re teaching them how to think, not just react. Control of the feet at a walk or slow trot builds understanding, balance, and confidence before adding speed. If you don’t have control at a slow pace, you won’t magically have it faster. In desensitization and flag work, rushing only creates tension. The goal isn’t to make the horse tolerate pressure — it’s to help them process it. That’s where flooding comes in. Flooding is when a horse is exposed to too much pressure or stimulus at once, with no way to escape or understand it. They may shut down or appear “quiet,” but mentally they’re overwhelmed — not learning. Slow work = thinking feet. Thinking feet = a calmer, more confident horse.
