I hurt my daughter's feelings due to some unhealed trauma that was a blindspot for me. Went straight to my therapist and we're going to do emdr to address this so I don't do it again. I apologized as soon as she told me but it doesn't mean anything if I don't do the work to fix it. I will never understand how parents refuse to do the work. I've been NC with my own parents for 14 years and I don't understand how they threw me away. I won't do that to my kids.

I told my mom that I would never treat my children the way she has treated me even now as an adult she said “But would you treat your children the way you treat me???” First of all, yes, I haven’t done anything bad to you other than hold you accountable. Second of all, IM YOUR CHILD. Why would you expect me to ever treat you like you’re my child??

If we’re adult peers, then I’m following my heart like I do with all other adult peers and not giving my time & energy to peers who disrespect and seem to dislike me.

“You want the respect of being senior to me but not the accountability” 💯 I can apply that in sooo many situations

I went full no contact yesterday. My parents stormed out of my kids tennis lesson. They didn’t even say a word as to why they were leaving. When I text checking on them they said it’s because I didn’t give them enough attention…during my child’s lesson. Their grandchild. The hurt in my son’s eyes will haunt me. It no longer was even a choice for me. Protecting my son from what I suffered is the only option.

my dad was telling me about a box of comics and i'm like dad those were mine, can i have them and hes like are they? i say yes, he says that he doesn't remember me being a comic reader and so i describe my favorite one (psylocke on the cover from an x-men 1996) i was like i have memories of this, i remember buying it with your money, and he just goes "i don't know about that" then proceeds to find the comic i just described 3 minutes later and just goes oh and moves on as if he literally didn't just tell me i was making things up. like I can own up to my mistakes to my kid in real time, why can't they own up to decades of insanity so they can work on owning up in real time?

We’re equal when they’re ducking responsibility but they’re the parent when they don’t like what we say. It’s so frustrating….especially when that’s been the dynamic from childhood….im your friend I’m your friend I’m your friend….how DARE you have an opinion that doesn’t match mine. Exhausting.

I gave up on any repairs over things that happened in my childhood. The obstacle in present day is the inability to treat me the way they want to be treated. The golden rule is pretty simple.

The crazy thing about this is that despite both of us being adults my mom thinks me being her child forever outweighs my adulthood. She refuses to let go of the power dynamic although it doesn’t apply in the same way anymore.

My own mother tried to say that same bit a few weeks ago. I gave her this analogy. You start a job and you understand that your boss is above you in the hierarchy. You treat the boss differently than your equal coworkers. It’s the bosses decisions that run the company. It’s the boss’s decision how much you make, what days you work, holidays etc. If you work for that boss for 10, 15, 50 years, that power dynamic never changes. That boss will always be the superior in that work relationship.

This is 💯 correct. It is ALWAYS the responsibility of the parent. Always.

Expressed to my mom that I didn't appreciate how much my family made fun of me (it was a LOT) and she just goes "Did you ever think we were trying to cheer you up?" HUH? 😂

They always want it to be “equal” when they want the adult child to facilitate repair, but it’s “I’m still your parent” when they want to assert authority and control.

Parents expect respect regardless of how old you are.
My emotionally immature parents didn't do a good job, and they very deliberately chose not to hear any criticism or do any healing and now we don't speak because I won't bow down before them anymore

NEVER HEARD ANYTHING MORE REAL. I've been no contact with my mom since feb 2023, she puts the full blame on me, when it was Her choice for us not to speak again all because I asked her to get therapy, didnt force, didnt even set a boundary, literally just asked her to concider therapy or councilling. she expects me to just "forgive" her without change or effort on her part. pretty sure its not on me to repair this, all im asking is for her to heal and become a better person and take some accountability and get help, if she wanted a relationship with me, I cant be the only one healing from the childhood she put me through.

If an adult child feels there is a power imbalance with their parent then that child is in some way still dependent upon their parent for something… financial, emotional, or some other need that the parent is providing them. Otherwise it ceases to exist once that child establishes complete independence.

I’ve been considering breaking no contact now after 3 years therapy and 6 no contact. Even the thought of me breaking the silence is a win for them bc I’d always bear the responsibility of repair. I’m willing to swallow that for progress but also scared I’m just gonna re-traumatize myself to no avail. Honestly this scenario is so heavy to me and is so delicate to tackle
