If the model isn't gonna be exported, is there any reason to do this rather than making a simple material for the gradient instead? Using a material would make the gradient even smoother. Since it's not limited by pixel count but instead by color depth (though the difference may be minuscule depending on your texture resolution)

have you ever used vertex painting? you get an even smoother gradient and you have a lot more control too! on the downside it's harder to make a smooth gradient across multiple verts
