a fact about “Gassed,” the artist spent months on the front for an assignment where he was to paint american and allied forces working together, as this was around the time the americans weren’t fully deployed in france. he found nothing that the govt would allow him to use until he was leaving the front and stopped by a casualty clearing station. he said he felt that was the clearest representation of allied solidarity, young men of different nations, vocations, and ethnicities fighting and dying together for an old man’s war
